Spaniard injured in explosion at Hotel Saratoga returns to Spain on Monday

MADRID, Spain.- The Spanish tourist César Román, injured on May 6 during the explosion at the Hotel Saratoga in Havana, will return to Spain on Monday.

The young man has recovered “much sooner than expected,” reported Valentín González Formoso, mayor of As Pontes, César Román’s hometown.

According to an agency report EFE, González Formoso assured this Sunday that the young man is in “very good physical condition.”

In an act in the town of Boiro (La Coruña), the mayor pointed out that Román’s family, with whom he has kept in contact, authorized him to thank the Spanish diplomatic service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for having “been so involved in Such a painful situation.”

For more than 20 days hospitalized in Cuba, César Román had to undergo surgery for several fractures.

Cristina Lopez-Ceron Ugarte, César Román’s girlfriend, died due to the explosion of the Saratoga. At the time of the accident, the young people were walking in front of the hotel facility.

The couple was in Cuba celebrating the recently completed 30 years of César Román.

The remains of Cristina López-Cerón Ugarte were returnees to Galicia on May 12. There the family received them, who moved them to Landro, Viveiro, the city of his birth.

The death had been registered in the Civil Registry of the Spanish Consulate in Havana. This procedure is essential for repatriation.

The two Spanish tourists lived in the municipality of As Pontes.

According to the latest part of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), 46 people died in the accident at the Hotel Saratoga. Of those injured, 11 remain hospitalized, including four children.
