The National Executive Committee of the Socialist Party of Uruguay (PSU) issued a statement in which it recalled that in June they had already condemned “the serious human rights violations committed in Nicaragua by the regime headed by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, which include persecution by police and paramilitary forces of citizen protests and opposition leaders and parties “, and that now, within the framework of elections held last Sunday in Nicaragua, described the government of Daniel Ortega as a” regime “that deepened” the repression with the aim of mounting an electoral farce that would allow him to perpetuate himself in power, persecuting and imprisoning or forcing candidates, candidates and leaders who were not puppets of the regime to go into exile ”.

“This includes figures of brave and impeccable trajectory in Sandinismo, such as the late poet Ernesto Cardenal or comrade Dora María Téllez, today imprisoned for disagreeing with the government,” continues the statement formulated in the form of numbered vignettes.

It was a vote, adds the PSU, but it was not “a real election. Accompanied in the formula by his wife Rosario Murillo, he intends to access the presidency of his country for the fourth consecutive time. As of the 2016 elections, the deterioration of democracy in Nicaragua accelerates ”.

Denunciation and repudiation

The PSU recalled that in 2018 there was a social outbreak and at least 328 people have been killed and the public forces and the army are pointed out as responsible for the deaths.

“Although we do not ignore the interventionist and imperialist policies of the North American government and its attempts to destabilize those governments that do not align with its political and economic objectives, which we denounce and repudiate, as we have already said before, the Socialist Party of Uruguay does not have nor will it have double standards to analyze and assess the national and international reality, ”the statement continues.
