Senator Rincón meets with Undersecretary Larraín and asks the Government for a solution for pensioners who apply for PGU

The senator of the Democrats collective Ximena Rincón met with the undersecretary of Social Welfare, Christian Larraín, in order to find solutions for pensioners who apply for the Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU).

In the instance, Rincón stated that “there are many pensioners who have been surprised that they are not entitled to the PGU or receive an amount much lower than what they should receive.”

“The reason for this unpleasant surprise resides in the fact that Law 21,419 established that, for the calculation of the PGU, the pensioner’s current pension is not used, but the base pension, which is calculated with respect to the capital that the pensioner had when he turned 65,” added Rincón.

Likewise, the parliamentarian explained that “the problem is that the base pension thus calculated is, in the vast majority of cases, much higher than the pension that the pensioner receives today.”

According to Rincón, said situation “mainly affects pensioners who withdrew surpluses at the time of retiring, all those who made withdrawals and, especially, programmed retirement pensioners since, as is public knowledge, their pensions are decreasing over the weather”.

Given this, the senator asked the undersecretary for the Government to calculate the cost of using -in determining the PGU- the current pension of retirees instead of the base pension. This, as a “first step” to solve the problem.
