Senate expresses condemnation of attacks perpetrated by Russia against Ukraine

Hoy Paraguay

The Chamber of Senators approved a project through which it expresses its condemnation of the attacks perpetrated by Russia against Ukraine and which have left a balance of hundreds of deaths and thousands of refugees.

During the ordinary session held this Thursday, the Senate analyzed among one of its agenda items the draft declaration “By which the attacks and violence that are taking place in Ukraine by the Russian government are strongly condemned.”

The proposal had been originally proposed by Colorado senator Lilian Samaniego in her capacity as president of the Foreign Relations Commission, in view of the latest conflicts that have been taking place in Ukrainian territory.

In the document presented to the Upper House, it is stated that “the only way to overcome this crisis in a lasting way is to resume the negotiation processes in a constructive and flexible manner, respecting international mechanisms, adhering to international law, the principles of the Charter of the United Nations”.

Finally, the plenary session of the Senate voted in favor of the approval of the aforementioned draft declaration, through which a repudiation of the military action initiated by Russia against Ukraine is expressed.

So far there are already more than a million Ukrainians who had to flee their country after the start of the attack by Russian forces, according to data from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
