Santander Mexico appoints Felipe García as new CEO

Santander Mexico has appointed Philip Garcia Ascencio as its new CEO. The foregoing, after it was announced in mid-June that the Mexican, Hector Grisi Czechwho today is president and CEO of the group, will be the CEO of Santander globally from January 2023.

The appointment was approved this Thursday in a session of the board of directors of Banco Santander Mexicoso Felipe García assumes the position from this very day, although Héctor Grisi will remain in his position until the end of 2022.

The bank of Spanish origin announced that it will also strengthen its internal organization focused on the client with the creation of two vice-presidencies: the commercial network and corporate and institutional banking, headed by Fernando Quesada; and the one of administration and finances, in charge of Didier Mena.

“With this appointment, the transition process of Grisi Checa as global CEO will be supported, in addition to advancing in the succession process itself in Mexico, ensuring a change in accordance with the best corporate governance practices,” the institution highlighted.

Felipe García, who until Thursday was serving as deputy general manager of Santander Corporate and Investment Banking (SCIB) in Mexico, has a degree in economics from ITAM and a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics.

He has more than 25 years of experience in banking, having held leadership positions for Mexico and Latin America in entities such as Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs. He began his professional career in the Public Debt Office of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit.

New cycle

Laura Diez Barroso, chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Santander México, pointed out in this regard: “in an orderly and institutional process, and given the well-deserved opportunity that Héctor Grisi received to lead the group, the appointment of Felipe García Ascencio in the general management It represents both the appreciation of solid talent within the bank, and the beginning of a new cycle that, following the strategy we have in Mexico, will lead us to consolidate our position as the best bank, due to our focus on customers, innovation and competitiveness. ”.

Meanwhile, Felipe García Ascencio highlighted the privilege of assuming the general management of Banco Santander in Mexico, “where the talent and capacity of the team stands out, to take it to a new level in the face of the challenges of an evolving market and where we have proposed being at the forefront in customer proximity, innovation in our products, sustainable and responsible banking, and promoting the continuous development of our collaborators”.

Héctor Grisi Checa mentioned, for his part, that the board’s decision is, without a doubt, a success that opens the way for Santander Mexico to have a new leadership.

“With a vision like that of Felipe García, who combines experience in strategic businesses, a recognized track record and the drive that I am sure will consolidate Mexico’s participation as a strategic unit of the group,” he said.
