The opinion of the Mayor “the solution is not to close it”
The tragic event that occurred in the morning hours of last Wednesday, January 1, in Rivera Park once again unleashed a controversy, mainly through Social Networks, about the way the main public walk in the city of Melo should be managed.
In principle, the Mayor of Cerro Largo does not agree to close this space, one of the busiest both during the day and at night in the departmental capital.
“It is an issue that worries me as a citizen. My question is, if the Park remains closed, would these types of events be avoided or would they occur elsewhere? expressed the Communal Chief in a press conference.
“It is an issue that we have to analyze because sometimes the prohibition causes people to go to other places, perhaps also causing inconveniences. Obviously there is nothing worse than the death of a person. Of course we are concerned about these types of acts of violence that society has beyond the place where they occur.” manifested José Yurramendi.
“It is an issue that unfortunately has occurred on other occasions in other parts of the department or in other parts of the city, therefore, personally, I do not believe that the solution is to close the Park” he opined. “Good coexistence has to be provided by people” said.
Although the dissuasive presence of both Municipal Police officials and members of the Ministry of the Interior can be important, we must also take into account the state in which those who remain on public roads or in public places often find themselves until that time. public spaces. “We all know how little respect, in those states, is given to the Municipal official who is the one who often closes the Park and who has the support of the National Police. There is a certain state of the person that does not respect anything.”
The Mayor said that we should think about the thousands of people who come on weekends to enjoy, in this case Rivera Park, but also the rest of the public spaces, in peace and without causing disturbances. “For a few we condemn them to no longer be there” accurate.
INFLEXIBLE WITH THOSE WHO BEHAVE BADLY
“We have to be strong and forceful with those who misbehave” Yurramendi emphasized. “I don’t think the solution is to close places so that those who behave well cannot enjoy them” he insisted.
He did not rule out that one measure could be the performance of spirometry in the Highway Bridge area. “Beyond that, I think that at the Police level we have to be tough with those who behave badly and not take general measures that later end up harming those who behave well, which are the majority as in all areas. We do not want to take hasty measures as some are asking in terms of closing the Park because there are thousands of people who are going to enjoy it, there are entire families who are going to enjoy it during the day, during the afternoon and also during the night. “Young people who go and enjoy without causing any disturbance or bothering anyone” held.
He reiterated that we must be judicially and police inflexible with people who transgress the rules, hindering good coexistence between citizens. “The Municipality as owner of the space must coordinate with these two institutions –Judiciary and Ministry of the Interior- to see if any other measure needs to be taken to help peace and public safety.” José Yurramendi, Mayor of Cerro Largo, finished saying.
