OSE is carrying out “maneuvers on the drinking water supply network” in the system that supplies Montevideo and the metropolitan area since this Saturday, which can generate “occasional lack of water” and “occasional turbidity phenomena” in some areas, although it is not limited in which ones, therefore the warning is for the entire capital. The warning is still in effect for this Sunday. In Pando, for example, the service cut is throughout the city until 8:00 p.m.
In turn, the state company asked to restrict water consumption while the cuts last. The objective of the maneuver, reported the entity, is “to more effectively manage the available resources” and the water cuts will be “limited.”
The work is being carried out on the metropolitan system, which is the most affected by the water deficit. According to the latest Presidency report this Saturday, the sodium and chloride levels were below the exception allowed by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) in the three pumping lines that supply Montevideo and the metropolitan area.
In line four, 659 milligrams per liter of chloride and 399 sodium were registered, in the fifth line 625 of chloride and 380 sodium and in the sixth line 655 of chlorides and 397 sodium. The exception enabled up to 720 mg/l of chloride and 440 of sodium.
The recommendations of the MSP in the face of the water crisis
The Ministry of Public Health reiterated the recommendations it had issued at the time, when the increase in salt and chloride levels was announced.
General population: without diagnosed hypertension
-
Maintain the usual daily water consumption, which can be entirely OSE water
-
Do not add salt to food in children starting semi-solid/solid diets (infants up to 2 years of age)
-
If possible, for the preparation of infant formulas, use mineral water
-
In a population with an unknown increased risk of being hypertensive (over 60 years of age), periodic blood pressure checks are recommended.
People who take antihypertensives and diuretics
-
They should minimize the consumption of foods with excess sodium
-
They can continue to consume OSE water up to one liter per day and it is recommended to complete their usual intake with mineral water
People with chronic kidney disease, heart failure, cirrhosis, or pregnant
-
Avoid drinking OSE water as much as possible, advised by your attending physician
-
In case you have to drink OSE water, it is recommended not to exceed one liter of water per day and to increase the frequency of blood pressure checks.
-
Complete the intake of the daily volume of water recommended by your doctor.
