Protesters and Government of Ecuador agree to create a negotiating table

The parties have agreed that the organizations meet and then coordinate with the commission and the Government

After 13 days of protests, the president of the National Assembly of Ecuador, Virgilio Saquicela, announced that after a meeting held on the afternoon of this Saturday, June 25, the representatives of the Government and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) They have agreed to create a dialogue table to deal with the demands that motivate the indefinite general strike promoted by the indigenous people.

Saquicela explained that the meeting was attended by representatives of Conaie, officials from international organizations, the Minister of Government, Francisco Jiménez; the Secretary of the Republic and the Foreign Minister, Juan Carlos Holguín, according to the newspaper ‘El Comercio’.

The president of the National Assembly indicated that the dialogue began with the idea of creating a commission and being able to set up a table to be able to sit down to discuss the points that are requested from the social movements.

“It is an advance, a beginning. For now it is the only commitment that there is and the Government’s openness to deal with this issue of solution, “explained Saquicela.

The objective of this initiative is to lower the tension and confrontations until the dialogue begins. The parties have agreed that the organizations meet and then coordinate with the commission and the Government. Meanwhile, the request is that there be no more clashes between protesters and security forces.

This commission could meet in an impartial place like the one used this Saturday, Saquicela has indicated.

The strike began with a series of demands about the conservative policies of Guillermo Lasso. The president expressed his willingness to dialogue, but also denounced an attempted “coup d’état” to remove him from power and declared a state of emergency to suspend the right to demonstrate and allow the use of force by the security forces.
