Project on new province remains on the table

The Chamber of Deputies left on the table the bill that seeks to create another province in the Dominican Republic and modifies the limits of the Santo Domingo province.

This is the Matías Ramón Mella province, proposed by the deputy of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) Tonty Rutinel Domínguez, an issue that was pending to be known in the next session on Tuesday, June 7.

Currently, the country has 31 provinces, in addition to the National District, which would imply that, if the piece is approved, there will be another senator in Congress (which would be 33) as well as another civil governor.

In the legislative project, the territory comprising the municipalities of Santo Domingo Norte, Santo Domingo Oeste, Los Alcarrizos and Pedro Brand is segregated from the Santo Domingo province, so that from now on it will constitute the Matías Ramón Mella province.

According to the initiative, the limits of the Matías Ramón Mella province would be to the north, Monte Plata province; to the south, the National District and the Caribbean Sea; to the east, Ozama River; and to the west, San Cristóbal province. Meanwhile, the limits of the Santo Domingo province will be to the north, Monte Plata province; to the south, the Caribbean Sea; to the east, San Pedro de Macorís province; and to the west, the Ozama River. The head municipality of the aforementioned demarcation will be Santo Domingo Oeste.

One of the reasons for the creation of the Matías Ramón Mella province, according to the eleventh recital of the bill of laws, is that the great surface and demographic extension of the Santo Domingo province makes it difficult to manage, develop and effectively provide the basic services that its inhabitants deserve.
