The Pro Referendum Commission to repeal 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) denounced a series of vandalization this weekend and claimed a “debate in the plane of ideas” that respects those who “opin contrary”.
The president-elect of the Broad Front (FA), Fernando Pereira, said in statements to Underlined that there is “a number of facts that are worrying” and stressed that events of these characteristics have been reported in “several departments.” “We have to be able to have a worthy campaign, without insults, without grievances and without adjectives”added Pereira and said that if that is not possible, it is because “some of our values are distorted.”
One of the accusations came from the Commission for the Yes of Jump, which issued a statement this Saturday where it denounced the breakage of posters and other signs associated with pink “at different points” in the city.
In the letter, the departmental command targeted those who promote the No: it highlighted that these actions “they are not isolated” and they do nothing but “dirty the campaign”. In addition, he added that the facts denounced make it clear that “the speech defending freedoms, respect and healthy coexistence is nothing more than that: a simple speech.”
“We call on groups and political parties in favor of the No to the repeal of the 135 articles, to carry out a transparent campaign and respect for free political expression, because this way of doing politics is not Uruguay,” said the statement from the Yes, who also asked for the commitment of “give the debate with the corresponding height”.
During the week, the publicist Selva Andreoli, Esteban Valenti’s partner (who will be in charge of the communication of the pink commando during the campaign), had denounced that a tire of his vehicle was slashed in the area of the Centennial Stadium. “The dirty campaign started,” Andreoli wrote via Twitter.
Well, the dirty campaign began. I have already experienced this in other campaigns. Stop my car half an hour!! When I came back the wheel was cut in two parts. According to the station’s pistero it was “with evil and treachery, brazenly.” I wonder: there were no cameras? I dont know

It was within this framework that Pereira claimed “lower the intensity of the insults and improve the quality of the arguments” and assured that he hopes that the Ministry of the Interior takes “letters in the matter”.
In a dialogue with Underlined, the president-elect of the FA stressed that the referendum on March 27 will be a “constitutional and legal” instance and that it is not “no stick in the wheel”, as different government leaders allude to. “It is a democratic day where each one of us will be able to repeal a law that, from our point of view, is of poor democratic quality,” he said.
