President Cortizo will participate in the COP 26 Climate Change Conference

The President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo Cohen will travel to Glasgow in Scotland this Thursday, October 28, to participate in the COP 26 Climate Change Conference, which brings together heads of state from around the world.

On Monday, November 1, President Cortizo will be a speaker at the Canning House, the main forum in the United Kingdom for information, discussion, contacts and debates on politics, economy and business in Latin America, with the conference “Panama: Gateway to Latin America” .

The purpose is to increase knowledge about Panama’s actions in relation to climate change and the path towards a sustainable economy; as well as strengthening relations between the United Kingdom and Latin America.

According to the official program, it is expected that later, the president and his delegation will participate in the opening of this world conference at 12:00 noon Scottish time and address the heads of state and governors gathered in the plenary session of this important event.

The discussion takes place within the framework of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP26) to show the progress of our country on relevant issues in climate change, accompanied by other countries and strategic partners that are advancing in the same way in accelerating the climate action, for the fulfillment of the goals and objectives proposed in the Paris Agreement.

On Tuesday, November 2, the event continues with the speeches of the heads of presidents and heads of state who participate in the world event considered a crucial moment in the efforts to face the threat of climate change.

At 2:00 pm, the President of the Republic will participate in the signing of the Declaration of Carbon Negative Countries, a group that Panama integrates together with Bhutan and Suriname, as the only nations in the world that absorb more greenhouse gases (GHG ) of those emitted by human activities.

The document will be signed by the foreign ministers of these three countries in the pavilion of Panama with the purpose of reaffirming their commitment as carbon negative countries by strengthening efforts against global warming.

Some 20,000 people, including heads of state, diplomats and activists, are expected to meet in person in Glasgow to set new targets to cut carbon, oil and gas emissions that harm the planet.

President Cortizo is scheduled to meet with counterparts from the region to promote a high-level dialogue on bilateral issues.
