President Boric and post-plebiscite scenarios if the new Constitution is rejected: “Repeating that plebiscite (entry) would seem redundant to me”

With only 13 days to go before the exit plebiscite on September 4, the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, referred to the various options for the results of the elections, where the citizens will choose whether or not Chile will have a new Constitution.

It should be noted that the President had stated that, if the Magna Carta proposal is rejected, he would promote a new constituent process, which would point -in the first instance- to a new Constitutional Convention.

in conversation with CHVthe head of state specified what rules this new body would have, to which he specified that “it is something that Congress has to discuss, I cannot assume the unilateral decision of issues that are subject to discussion.”

“From the experience we have had this year of debate, surely there are many things that can be improved, I do not deny that. We are going to be attentive to the proposals that are made, respecting certain minimums, such as 100 % elected, I think parity is a tremendously important advance,” she said.

Where if he was more open to changes, it is with respect to a possible new Constitutional Convention.

“I believe that the participation of the original peoples in the constituent process is very valuable. How that participation is exercised can be discussed, without a doubt, in Congress. Either the discussion of the national list systems or not, are part of the discussions,” he said.

Regarding a possible repetition of the election process if the Rejection wins, the President stressed that “the people of Chile have already made a decision and they did it in a very majority way. Repeating that plebiscite (entry) would seem redundant to me.”

On the other hand, President Boric addressed what he would do in case the Approval is imposed. This, after being consulted if he would send reforms to modify the approved text.

“It is important that when one participates in politics, there is some level of renunciation of personal autonomy. In this sense, I urged the parties to agree on what things must be clarified and what things should be modified so that, regarding the legitimate doubts that have arisen in the campaigns, there may be greater certainty in the Chilean population. They reached an agreement that I think is valuable, and as a government we are going to support that agreement and we are going to send those reforms, “he confirmed.

Regarding possible failures in the new Constitution, Boric indicated that “every human work has errors, however, I believe that the constituent process has more virtues than defects. It is perfectible, yes, by the way. There are clear mechanisms to be able to perfect it that grant much more certainty that in the event that we have to do everything again from the beginning”.
