Port of Rio will readjust frozen tariffs since 2016

The National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq) authorized the Portos Rio Port Authority to readjust the tariffs at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, which had not been changed since 2016. The new tariffs, as well as their maximum limits and the tariff structure, will come into force in 30 business days, starting on the 19th of this month, when the regulatory agency’s decision was published. With the approval of the request for tariff standardization and tariff adjustment, referring to the period from October 20, 2016 to May 31, 2022, Antaq authorized an average readjustment index of 29.07% and average tariff effect of 12.33 %.

According to the director of Business and Sustainability at PortosRio, Jean Paulo Castro e Silva, with the tariff restructuring, which revised the outdated tables, PortosRio guarantees the due remuneration for the port infrastructure, which will allow promoting efficiency gains to be reverted in benefit of the users of the Port of Rio.

Port tariffs are charged by the port to shipowners (shipping companies), leasing companies, operators and users in general, focusing on the use of waterway access infrastructure; docking; terrestrial; storage; among other miscellaneous services. In waterway access, the charge is made on the total capacity of the vessels, whether empty or full, because all vessels use the same public port infrastructure and other services.

Efficiency gains are expected because the amount collected from tariffs is used by the Port Authority to improve the port, since tariffs cover the costs of maintaining navigation conditions from the access channel to the berths.

Income from port operations is also used to pay for networks and systems in the quay area, as well as surveillance, which is the responsibility of the Port Guard, in addition to indirect expenses with port administration.
