Peruvian Congress declares President López Obrador persona non grata

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was declared persona non grata by the Peruvian Congress this Thursday, May 25.

The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwas declared persona non grata by the plenary session of the Peruvian Congress this Thursday, May 25.

The measure was approved after the repeated statements by López Obrador on the internal affairs of Peru and the refusal to transfer the presidency of the Pacific Alliance to the Andean country.

In accordance with EFE, The decision was made with 65 votes in favor, 40 against and 2 abstentions after having debated a motion with that approach that was approved last Monday by the Foreign Relations Commission of Congress.

In supporting the motion, the conservative parliamentarian María del Carmen Alva, president of that parliamentary group, said that López Obrador’s statements constitute a “violation of the principle of non-interference” in the internal affairs of other countries.

According to Alva, “the Peruvian people do not accept acts of interference and meddling in our sovereignty.” Left-wing parliamentarians rejected the motion against López Obrador because it would affect the historical ties with the Mexican people.

In this sense, parliamentarian María del Carmen Alva pointed out that it is “a political gesture that Congress can make” and that “relations with Mexico have not been affected.”

“The only thing that is happening here is that President López Obrador is not recognizing our President. That will never affect trade and bilateral relations, “he pointed out.

On Monday, May 22, the Foreign Relations Commission of the Peruvian Congress approved the motion to reject the statements made by the President of Mexico and proposed to the plenary session that he be declared persona non grata and that the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs be urged to “carry out the necessary actions” so that “it does not enter the national territory.”
