A one-year-old baby was murdered in the Tocorón prison, Aragua state, by the partner of a woman who went to the prison to celebrate the child’s birthday. The young woman, identified as Karelis Grymayry Arcilla Montilla, left her son in the care of the man, who was serving a sentence for sexual abuse of minors.
The NGO A Window to Freedom (UVL) denounced the death of a one-year-old baby in the Tocorón prison, Aragua state, on December 14, 2022, after his mother, Karelis Grymayry Arcilla Montilla, decided to go to the prison to celebrate with her partner , Enrique Antonio Soto Colmenares, the minor’s birthday.
It is presumed that Arcilla Montilla, who entered Tocorón taking advantage of the conjugal visit schedule, was not approached by the authorities to prevent her from entering such a dangerous place with a baby. Rather, she was allowed to go to the “social area” of those facilities where there is a pool and playground.
The woman left Soto Colmenares, who was serving a six-month sentence for the commission of sexual abuse of minors, in charge of her son while she left the premises to buy soft drinks and sweets to celebrate the child’s birthday.

According to the accounts of witnesses, which were collected by UVL, Arcilla Montilla re-entered the social area of Tocorón and found her son passed out, bloodied, and with a low respiratory rate. The area apparently did not have any surveillance due to the incident that caused the injuries to the child.
Immediately afterwards, the little one was transferred to the San Francisco de Asís ambulatory in the Zamora municipality.
The baby died due to diffuse hemorrhage from closed head trauma due to blunt injuries.
Soto Colmenares, meanwhile, threatened to kill the minor’s mother if she accused him of having committed the act. However, a cellmate of the man realized what was happening and started a fight against the accused and accused him of allegedly beating and sexually abusing the child.
Upon learning of what had happened, the prison population in Tocorón took the law into their own hands under the impassive gaze of the authorities and killed the man.

On the other hand, Karelis Grymayry Arcilla Montilla was arrested for the alleged commission of the crime of infanticide. She is currently being held at the Cicpc headquarters in Maracay awaiting a preliminary hearing.
UVL reported that the prison population in that detention center held a protest at the end of December to demand that the woman be transferred to Tocorón so that she “pay with her life” for having left the minor in the care of Soto Colmenares, who was a rapist. convicted and confessed.
