In a scenario where the debate seemed predictable and structured, Yamandu Orsi stood out for his sober and disciplined approach, avoiding fruitless disputes with Alvaro Delgado and concentrating on providing concrete proposals to the electorate.
Orsi’s strategy consisted of transmitting messages of tranquillity, ensuring that his government would avoid risky initiatives, both in the management of the AFAPs and in matters of security, promoting what he called “a safe change.”
Orsi introduced himself by emphasizing his roots and government experience: «I am Yamandú Orsi, I grew up in a neighborhood of an inland city, I attended public school in my neighborhood, I graduated as a teacher and I had the responsibility of governing Canelones for two consecutive terms. », he highlighted, highlighting his notable career and management in the mayor’s office. He insisted that his 20 years of management experience supported him to lead the country.
During the debate, although his speech could sometimes be perceived as monotonous, Orsi made significant announcements, such as his commitment not to raise taxesdistancing himself from the statements of his potential Minister of Economy, Gabriel Oddone. He also promised to increase minimum pensions to equal them with minimum salaries at the end of his term, lower the retirement age to 60 years, not eliminate, but review, the AFAP, and build a reference hospital on the Canary coast, among other measures. .
Although his campaign included slogans advocating honesty in government, Orsi avoided focusing on the scandals that occupied his Frontista colleagues during the campaign, except for a brief allusion to passports and the Executive Towerwith a special mention about Alejandro Astesiano absent from his speech.
A debate in a secure format
The debate format, which prevented interruptions and direct questions between the candidates, contributed to the lack of direct confrontations and passionate moments. Even so, Orsi took advantage of brief opportunities to criticize the management of President Luis Lacalle Pou, especially on issues such as housing, security and education, questioning the lack of compliance with promised housing and highlighting the figures achieved during the Frente Amplio governments.
Ultimately, the debate corroborated the calculated nature of Orsi’s strategy: prioritizing a thoughtful and calm approach, escaping the usual political chicanery, and focusing on presenting his credentials and proposals in a clear and direct manner.
