Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo is a member of the Argentine National Gendarmerie (border police) and was arrested on December 8 after entering the country from Colombia, when he was on his way to visit his partner and son. Saab says he is being prosecuted for “links to terrorist actions”
The Organization of American States (OAS) repudiated and condemned this Friday, January 3, the arbitrary detention of the Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo, who was arrested in Venezuela on December 8, and demanded that Nicolás Maduro “immediately release” him. For its part, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announced precautionary measures for their benefit.
The OAS explained through a release that Gallo’s imprisonment “constitutes a crime against humanity, it is a violation of international norms, of the fundamental principles of humanity and justice,” adding that the denial of communication and the denial of consular assistance is a direct violation of the Convention Vienna on Consular Relations to emphasize that these events “are further proof of the systematic violation of fundamental human rights by the Venezuelan regime.”
According to the IACHRNahuel Gallo “finds himself in a situation of seriousness and urgency, since his rights to life and personal integrity face a risk of irreparable damage.”
The precautionary measures require the Venezuelan Government, among other things, to report whether Gallo “is in State custody and the circumstances of his detention, or the measures taken to know his whereabouts,” to communicate whether there is a criminal case and that allows the gendarme to communicate with his family and legal representatives.
Other demands of the Organization of American States on the Maduro administration is that it comply with international treaties and agreements on human rights and international relations and, like the Inter-American Human Rights Organization, requests that their physical safety be certified and guaranteed. , legal assistance is provided and contact with the family is allowed.
Nahuel Gallo is a member of the Argentine National Gendarmerie (border police) and arrived in the country on December 8, by land from Colombia, to go to the state of Táchira and visit his partner, with whom he has a son. He was arrested and is being prosecuted for alleged “links to terrorist actions,” as reported by the attorney general, Tarek William Saab.
