MIAMI, United States. – Nine Cuban rafters who arrived at the port of El Cuyo, Yucatan state, in Mexico, were rescued by the authorities of that country this Saturday morning, according to the Yucatan Journal.
The nine migrants – seven men and two women – left Cuba March 19, they told the local press. After the rescue, the group was transferred to the Tizimín Municipal Police base, where they received medical attention, food, drinks and were given a serum, since some had problems of dehydration.
On the morning of this Saturday, April 2, the Municipal Police received reports about people wandering in the back of the port of El Cuyo. When they went to the place, they helped the nine rafters.
After several days adrift, the boat of the Cuban migrants landed on the beach of the small port of the municipality of Tizimín, on the border with Quintana Roo.
The Yucatan Journal He specified that the rafters were undocumented and that they would be handed over to the personnel of the National Migration Institute.
The press report identifies the migrants as: José DFC, 21 years old; Yurisky P., 31; Yonel GC, 35; Eliobis EM, 41; Yarisleydi PA, 19; Raysel CL, 20, Eleydis PV, 19; Mainier MM, 29; and Pedro QF, 32.
Recently, the Mexican press also reported of the case of eight rafters, presumably Cuban, who were found drifting northeast of Isla Mujeres, in the state of Quintana Roo. The migrants were found safe and sound by a tanker that was crossing the Yucatan Canal on February 10.
The rescued people were also handed over to the staff of the National Institute of Migration, for their subsequent transfer to the city of Mérida.
In November 2021, a Bahamas-flagged merchant vessel also rescued 19 Cuban rafters on the high seas, who were treated and handed over to a Mexican Navy ship.
Weekly, dozens of Cuban rafters launch into the sea with the aim of reaching the coast of Florida, United States. However, most migrants are intercepted by US authorities.
At the beginning of 2022, the United States Coast Guard repatriated 119 Cubans who had tried to reach the country’s coasts illegally and were intercepted in 12 operations carried out in the Florida Keys.
