Nicaragua calls for “respectful cooperation” in CELAC, Chile demands release of political prisoners

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada demanded on Tuesday at the CELAC Summit in Buenos Aires “respectful cooperation” and “solidarity”, at a time when the international community has imposed harsh penalties against the administration of President Daniel Ortega for human rights violations.

“Nicaragua, a simple, industrious people… adds to everything that unity proposes, to triumph over those who have always used the weapons of division, the desire for control, abuse, authoritarianism, degradation, arrogance, the alleged superiority, to continue with their perverse logic of masters of the world”, said Moncada in his speech.

In the forum that was held in the Argentine capital, Moncada insisted on a message of “unity” against what he called “terrorism, the coup” and demanded the incorporation of “clear examples of national dignity” in reference to the countries that according to them they are “making stories in the face of the barbaric occupations and invasions of the world.”

However, there was criticism of Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela for being countries “that do not respect democracy or human rights.”

“Let’s not forget the duty that Nicaragua has to advance towards the freedom of political prisoners.”

The Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, denounced the “undignified” situation in which the more than 200 political prisoners in Nicaragua find themselves.

“Let’s not forget the duty that Nicaragua has to advance towards the freedom of political prisoners, (these) opponents detained in undignified conditions, because only with freedom and dignity can the democracy of our peoples be strengthened,” Boric commented.

The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou also joined the accusations and added that there were countries present at the forum “that do not respect democracy, institutions, or human rights.”
