For journalist Phil Gunson, the conditions of the new talks are different from those of 2021 because in Latin America there have been important government changes and that “has changed the geopolitical aspect.”
After the meeting in France, on Friday, November 11, where the teams representing the negotiation between the government of Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition participated, in addition to the presidents Emmanuel Macron, Gustavo Petro and Alberto Fernández, the resumption of the talks seems be around the corner.
In issue 101 of CocuyoClaroyRaspaothis Thursday, November 17, the journalist Phil Gunson, senior analyst for the Andean region of Crisis Group, stressed that this new attempt is still not very clear because the two parties are not showing signs that they could sit down again at the negotiating table. .
In this space hosted by Luz Mely Reyes, director of the portal firewood effectand Xabier Coscojuela, member of the Editorial Board of SuchWhich, Gunson asserted that at this time, unlike in recent weeks, no one is talking about dates. “There is no date today and that is curious (…) I was with some colleagues in Washington last week where they told us that it is 99.9% ready (dialogue). Now that missing 0.1% seems to be very difficult”.

He stressed that in the case of the money that the United States has to release because they are frozen funds that belong to Venezuela, “which supposedly in a figure of around 3,000 million dollars or a little more, would be unfrozen to apply to social projects and of infrastructure in Venezuela and those funds have to be transferred from those accounts to others supposedly from the UN and that is complicated.
In his opinion, he does not believe that this is the substance of the matter “because they have had months to resolve the issue of how to transfer that money and honestly I do not think that at this moment that is what is hindering the thing (…) obviously there is an obstacle ».
In this sense, he said that there are other sources that say that the main obstacle comes from the opposition and that this happens through the United States, its main foreign ally.
“In particular, the members of the interim government have difficulties returning to Mexico. In the sense that the possible resumption of the talks means the end of the figure of the interim government and for some leaders of the Venezuelan opposition, this has become an end in itself. Let’s be clear, they have maintained themselves both financially and in terms of their leadership within the opposition due to the fact of being recognized as an interim government mainly by the United States,” he detailed.
