At the request of the Board of Directors of the agency, the National Directorate of the Electoral Service instructed an investigation to establish the responsibilities for the leak on its website about a file that contained personal information of 14,900,189 voters of the total list for the May municipal elections of 2021. Said document contained the RUT, political militancy and voting age.
After the leak, which was released by Third, the Servel indicated that an “exhaustive” investigation of the procedures on how the data is treated will be carried out. This was indicated through a press release, where they stated that the Servel Board of Directors had a meeting to analyze the background.
“In order to respond to a request made via transparency, a file was uploaded to the Electoral Service website with all the voters on the electoral roll for the elections held in May 2021, indicating age, sex, commune, party affiliation politician, native people and the condition of having or not having voted in said process,” they maintained.
“Additionally and incorrectly, the unique national role number of voters (RUN) was also instructed, and in circumstances that their information should only have been uploaded anonymously without identification and for statistical purposes,” they added.
In any case, they pointed out that “it is not true that the file had the candidates for whom the voter voted, violating the secrecy of the vote, since said information has never been in the possession of the Electoral Service.”
In the statement, they stated that the leaking of this voter data “constitutes a violation of the internal procedures of the Electoral Service.” Given this, they will adopt the following measures.
“Instruct an immediate and in-depth investigation of what happened, to establish responsibilities, take charge of the corresponding investigations and sanctions, until the complete clarification of the facts, without ruling out any measure,” he stated.
“Proceed to an exhaustive review of the procedures for data processing, delivery of these to the interested parties and custody of said information,” they added.
The Board of Directors of Servel “will rigorously monitor the work of the National Directorate until the complete clarification of these facts,” they concluded.
