The Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, indicated in his personal Twitter account that this Monday the portfolio will receive representatives of the companies affected by the fire at Punta Shopping.
“The Punta Shopping fire was terrible. Tomorrow we meet at the ministry with the affected companies to evaluate the instruments to respond to the labor situation of the workers,” Mieres wrote.
There are more than 2000 workers affected
The mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía, described the event as “a disaster. For Maldonado it will hit hard and at a time when the area had been recovered. The truth is that we are dismayed by the news, everyone here thinking that hopefully it stops in the middle or that it does not continue to advance, but there are a lot of doubts about it, “he said.
“Both the firefighters and the architects of the mall or the owners there are great unknowns and the misfortune is the number of people today who are already out of work. The truth is a bad moment for Maldonado”, concluded Antía.
The mayor of Maldonado indicated that there are between 150 and 200 businesses on the site that constitute the source of employment for some 2,000 people. In addition, there are more than 500 workers who have an indirect relationship with the shopping center.
On the other hand, in dialogue with El Observador, Antía indicated that they are working to save at least half of Punta Shopping, since the other half (Tienda Inglesa and Divino) is ruined.
