Mother of a 9/11 political prisoner: In prison you don’t live the future, you live the present

MIAMI, United States. – Rosa Ani Millo Espinoza, a 27-year-old mother and entrepreneur, was sentenced in March 2022 to six years in prison for the alleged crimes of contempt and public disorder after her participation in the demonstrations of July 11, 2021 (11J) in San Antonio de los Banos. She is currently serving a sentence in the Western Women’s Penitentiary Center “El Guatao”.

Before being arrested, Rosa Ani -who has a 10-year-old daughter- managed a hairdressing and makeup salon. His mother, Adis Nuvia Espinoza Machín, shared with CubaNet thoughts and concerns about your daughter’s situation.

The interviewee said that her daughter is in good health, although she suffers from problems caused by vaginal parasites due to the terrible water conditions in the prison.

She accurately remembers the day Rosa Ani decided to join the march, July 11, 2021: “That Sunday she prepared lunch for me and joined the march around 11:00 in the morning. I can assure you that more than half of the population of San Antonio de los Baños demonstrated that day.”

Rosa Ani’s mother questions why her daughter was detained, while other protesters were released or fined: “They take a group of boys and then release some of them, with fines, but a small group stayed until that were 17 of all the people who went down [marcharon] that day. In other words, of those who demonstrated, only 17 are serving sanctions.”

Adis Nuvia is proud that her daughter came out to demand justice and freedom that day, but at the same time regrets the impact that this situation has had on her life: “It is sad for a 27-year-old girl, a family girl, with her little girl, with her husband, with plans for a future that are at a standstill right now.”

The concern of this mother when she recognizes that in the penitentiary center “you don’t live the future, you live the present”.

Rosa Ani Millo Espinoza was sentenced to six years in prison in March 2022. “[El juez] He did not lower him a month, not a day. He did not take into account that she has a minor girl, that she has a family waiting for her ”, his mother lamented at that moment.

In 2022, the young was questioned by an official from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) to find out if jail had punished her. “I have nothing to punish. I have a single ideal, a single principle, a single concept: I want communism to fall, for there to be democratic parties, for my people to be defended and cared for by a government. You don’t, so I have nothing to regret,” she replied.
