The championship – which distributes tickets for the next World Cup – brings together more than 70 contestants who participate in a quick match tournament and another of classic games.

In the rapid game tournament, after the first three rounds, the Cuban Yaniela Forgas was in first place, followed by the Peruvians Deisy Cori and Ann Chumpitaz, both with 2.5 units.

Likewise, the Cubans Lisandra Ordaz and Yerisbel Miranda together with the Canadian Svitlana Demchenko and the Argentine Candela Francisco, stand out in the modality of the classic matches.

In parallel, the 56th edition of the Capablanca in Memoriam – which is played in the Elite, Open and Senior sections – continues its scheduled rounds with four days to go before the final.

The Senior segment, summoned for 60-year-old players, is led by Cuban Juan Carlos Pérez with 4.5 stripes out of five possible

The Elite group, the one with the highest rank, with the participation of ten Grandmasters (GM), is headed by the Brazilian Alexandr Fier and the Danish Jonas Bjerre, who accumulate four points each after five presentations of the nine scheduled.

In the Open, contested by 143 competitors, the Canadian Bator Sambuev and the Spanish José Fernando Cuenca lead the way, along with the Cubans Ermes Espinosa, Camilo Gómez, Roberto Elías and Cristian Vitier, all with a score of five units.

The Senior segment, summoned for 60-year-old players, is led by Cuban Juan Carlos Pérez with 4.5 stripes out of five possible.

The tournament is dedicated to the Cuban Grandmaster José Raúl Capablanca Graupera, who was world champion from 1921 to 1927, qualified as “the Machine” for playing chess.

Capablanca accumulated in his career with the boards a total of 302 victories, 246 boards and 35 losses. He has been the only world champion that Cuba has had and his career was recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
