The Uruguayan government was praised and cited as an example by the main shipping companies at the most important cruise show in the world, SeatradeCruise Global 2022, which took place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from April 25 to 28.
The undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Remo Monzeglio, told Channel 5 News that not only is the treatment given to the passengers of the Greg Mortimer, the ship that put Uruguay in the sights of the entire world during the first months of the pandemic, in 2020, but also for the solidarity of our country with many cruise passengers who were stranded in our territory.
The Humanitarian Corridors for the disembarkation of the crew of the Greg Mortimer ship and their transfer to their respective accommodations in Montevideo with all the health guarantees both for them and for the Uruguayan population in general, in an operation organized by the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Public Health , which included the participation of other Secretaries of State, as well as public and private institutions, constituted an outstanding milestone in the meeting in the United States.
Upon his return from Miami, Monzeglio announced that 143 cruise ships had arrived at the Port of Montevideo and around 40 at the Port of Punta del Este during the season. The origin of these cruises that are already confirmed is mainly Europe.
The hierarch said that “this figure is expected to increase because, as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the outbreak of Covid-19 in China, cruise ships are choosing our area.” He added that “the presence of Uruguay was fundamental, along with that of Chile, Argentina and Brazil, because the Southern Cone is a very appealing destination.”
Monzeglio stressed that “companies only allow fully vaccinated passengers to board and that also gives Uruguay security.”
SeatradeCruise Global 2020 received more than 11,000 visitors and more than 900 companies from more than 100 countries.
