The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) announced that it allowed the resumption of beer sales at the Backer factory in Minas Gerais. In 2020, the agency had banned the operation of the brewery due to a case of contamination.
The company was investigated and had its production units closed after batches of beers caused intoxication in consumers, resulting in the death of at least 10 people.
Investigators found the toxic substance diethylene glycol, used in refrigeration systems. Three company partners, seven employees and one provider were denounced by the Public Ministry.
The release by the Ministry was for two wineries in the company’s industrial park. Production was already taking place after the ministry authorized the return of product manufacturing in November 2021.
According to the agency, the decision was taken after analysis by agricultural auditors. They evaluated samples from batches that went on to be produced. In view of the absence of problems and the validation of the drinks, the permission to return to commercialization was issued.
