Rectors of the Simón Bolívar University suspend act after criticism from graduates

Some unions such as the Association of Professors of the Simón Bolívar University (Apusb) recall that suspending a graduation act for a speech is an obvious sign of intolerance

Authorities of the Simón Bolívar University (USM) did not welcome Gabriela Álvarez’s speech, who was in charge of initiating the graduation ceremony for the Mechanical Engineering and Architecture careers of said university.

Álvarez, in his speech, questioned the ethics and management of the governing authorities imposed by the government of Nicolás Maduro, in the middle of the Sartenejas auditorium, for which the rector Jorge Stefani, the administrative vice-rector, José Hernández and the academic vice-rector, Víctor Theotis; they made the decision, unilaterally, to suspend the act of graduation.

«We are facing an overwhelming reality, an institution in decline, a questioning of the future of our study house. As if that were not enough, we should add the lack of ethics, leadership and mysticism on the part of our rector authorities in the face of recent events,” said the young woman.

Seconds after having pronounced these words, and before the speech ended, the interim rectors of the USB got up and left the room in silence.

However, at the end of speaking, the girl was applauded by the listeners, who stood up and supported her speech, which also evidenced the severe crisis facing the university.

Minutes later, the young woman was taken out of the auditorium and USB staff asked those present at the graduation ceremony to leave the site. A delegation of graduates went to the rectorate to ask that the schedule be respected and, finally, it announced that the event had been postponed to 4:00 pm this Friday.

“How long are we going to put up with disrespect as citizens and as a country? The university authorities must fulfill the responsibility they have with us, because we had enough difficulties to get here, “said another graduate before the request that the attendees leave the auditorium.

reaction in social networks

The reactions on social networks were immediate. Dozens of tweets appeared criticizing the departure of the interim governing authorities from the degree act. These were chosen by the National Council of Universities (CNU) and sworn in on September 16, 2021, in what the rest of the country’s autonomous universities considered a direct intervention by the Chavista government.

Until now there is no official pronouncement on what happened from the rectorate of the USB. Some unions such as the Association of Professors of the Simón Bolívar University (Apusb) recall that suspending a graduation ceremony for a speech is an obvious sign of intolerance on the part of the institution’s authorities and they demanded fair actions for the graduates.
