Minister Yarza calls for calm to isapres for health reform: “It is not designed for them to go bankrupt, but rather to go step by step with a transition”

The Minister of Health, Maria Begona Yarzareferred to the controversy that has arisen with the isapres, who have shown a certain resentment with the health reform that the President’s Government plans to carry out Gabriel Boricpointing out in a statement that “the sector is in a critical situation.”

Given this scenario, the head of the Minsal specified that the Executive is planning a program that “proposes a health reform where the system is going to be universal, just like the universal PHC that we launched yesterday and there a path is proposed for the institutions of the isapres (…) that path is to form the system as complementary insurance”.

“Our government program is not designed so that they go bankrupt, but rather that they go step by step with a transition that allows them to go from isapres to complementary insurance and that is what should happen,” he added.

In addition, he indicated in Third that in the event of any bankruptcy of an isapre, the Government will act with “institutionality and our program provides a certain and clear path for these institutions.”

“If, as happened with Masvida in 2015-2016, it has a problem of this type that we did not foresee, what we are going to act is with the institutions that exist in Chile in relation to when one of these organizations has a problem or bankruptcy,” he added.

Crisis in the private system

In the statement issued by the isapres, they are assuring a crisis in the private system, to which the Secretary of State was skeptical when highlighting the profits that the industry has had during the last two decades.

“When one observes the trajectory of the isapres in terms of their profits, for at least 20 years to date, the isapres have sustained important profits, even in the year 2020, which is the worst year we have had since health point of view,” Yarza said.

Along the same lines, he explained that the industry “had profits, what we are observing is the year 2021 they did not make profits. So the reflection that we do, looking at that trajectory and looking at the profit numbers, is the catastrophic scenario that is pointed out, it does not seem possible, because an organization like this, it is most likely that they saved for moments like this, in 20 years profits, one year there were losses, they most likely have to solve this transitory problem. So we don’t see that scenario.”
