The Defense Minister, Jorge Taiana, developed a work agenda in France where he held a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Sébastien Lecornu, with whom he analyzed the possible consequences of the conflict in Ukraine and also addressed the issues of the shared agenda in terms of cooperation in defence.
Some of the points that both discussed were the “Submarine production, financing and Argentine participation through the Tandanor shipyardthe defense system and technology transfer”. Regarding peacekeeping missions, Argentina expressed its commitment to the UN Peacekeeping Operations and the possibility of exchanging information.
In regional terms, they discussed the context of peace and highlighted South America as a zone free of interstate conflicts, reported the Ministry of Defense.
Along these lines, Taiana explained the Argentine defense policy expressed in the National Defense Policy Directive and the scope of the National Defense Fund (Fondef) as “Instrument for the modernization of military equipment”.
On his tour of France, Taiana toured the shipyard of the Naval Group company, in the city of Cherbourgto know in detail the production of submarines and analyze together with a team of specialists the capabilities of the “Scorpene” model.
There he visited the submarine hull and structure manufacturing workshop and the assembly and integration workshop. Later he had a meeting with the CEO of the company, Pierre Eric Pommellet.
“We have had very important meetings during these days to strengthen the already solid relations of cooperation and exchange and to value the possibilities that Argentina presents in this world context,” said Taiana.
The official’s tour, which continues through Germany, aims to “strengthen bilateral ties in defense matters with both European countries.” In that sense, he will also keep a bilateral meeting with his German counterpart, Christine Lambrecht.
