Minister Montes rules out intentionality in forest fires: “One can speculate a lot but the important thing is to contain the fire”

The Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, Carlos Montes, addressed the current situation of the forest fires that plague the south-central zone of the country and assured that, in the event of intentional claims, this would be a “very complex” situation.

In this sense, the Secretary of State, who has been acting as the Government’s “liaison” minister in the Biobío region, maintained that if “if everything that is said were true, that everything is by intention, the truth is that we would be in a very complex situation.”

It should be noted that since the emergency situation due to the forest fires began at the beginning of February, different individuals, in various regions, have been detained by the police for allegedly starting fires. According to Montes, “this has been said a lot, it has been discussed in several meetings. Here there are formal complaints and the institutions have to respond.”

“They have told us that they are working on the different complaints, not only here, in this area (Biobío region), but also in other areas. One can speculate a lot and talk a lot about intentionality. The important thing is to contain the fire; on the one hand, and on the other hand the investigations of the institutions”, he declared.

At the moment, “there is nothing concrete, no concrete data that would allow us to say that this was based on what had been indicated,” the government authority sentenced.
