The president of the Committee of Experts on Social Security (CESS), Rodolfo Saldain, summarized the almost 300 pages of the diagnostic report and the 157 pages of recommendations for the reform of the Uruguayan pension system.
President Lacalle Pou seeks to align the bench of the government coalition and for that he summoned deputies and senators from the National Party, the Colorado Party, the Open Council, the Independent Party and the People’s Party to the Suárez Residence.
Also present were the Minister of Economy Azucena Arbeleche, the director of the OPP Isaac Alfie, the Minister of Labor Pablo Mieres and the general secretary of the Colorado Party, former president Julio María Sanguinetti.
The social security reform bill is in the drafting process, which presents its complexity due to its articles. The initiative covers all the boxes.
The government is determined to advance in this process and send the project for parliamentary discussion, although not in the short term, and seek the commitment of the opposition to accompany the initiative. From the Broad Front there is no inclination to vote for the suggestions of the CESS.
The National Political Table of the left-wing coalition issued a statement on Monday in which it highlights the need for a global reform of the pension system, but asks to know the reform project.
“It is the government that must define the content of the reform proposal that it understands must be carried out, leaving aside political calculations,” they affirm from Frente Amplista stores.
