Medical students describe abortion law for rape as discriminatory

The Association of Medicine Students for Projects and Exchanges (Aemppi) has issued a statement detailing the failures of the regulation.

The Association of Medical Students for Projects and Exchanges (Aemppi) has issued a release on the approval of the regulations of the Organic Law that Guarantees the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy in Case of Rape.

Aemppi points out that this law “not only does it fail to provide a fair and restorative law for women, girls and persons with childbearing potential who have suffered sexual violence, but also put up barriers to not allow them to have effective access to abortion after rape.”

The medical students detail that the regulation it becomes discriminatory by not caring for those people who, due to their class, race, ethnicity, immigration status and more, are more vulnerable.

The Assembly did not meet the deadlines

With this background, Aemppi has asked the government authorities to once again allow the review of the projects presented in the Assembly and to analyze them in a neutral manner, focusing on the well-being of survivors of sexual violence, with the purpose of choose the best proposal.

“The fight still continues and we will remain firm, watching over achieve a truly just and restorative law, without discrimination that guarantees abortion as a right for all people with the capacity to gestate in Ecuador”, concludes Aemppi. (AVV)
