During 2021, 107,603 ships arrived at the country’s ports

The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar) indicated that, by 2021, The Colombian Caribbean was the region with the highest international maritime traffic, having a participation of 87% of the arrivals and the Pacific, registered a 13% participation of the national total, mainly in the port of Buenaventura.

Cartagena, in this way, positioned itself as the port with the largest international maritime cargo traffic in the country, with a participation of 38.5% of calls in 2021 with 3,068 arrivals, 2.3% less than in 2020.

Santa Marta, on the other hand, was the second port with the highest international maritime cargo traffic in the country, with a participation of 18.5% and 1,473 arrivals, 7.1% more than the record for the year 2020.

Dimar reported that compared to the historical behavior of international maritime traffic, 2021 has a slight growth of 1.2% mainly due to the increase in arrivals in cargo shipssince the arrival of cruise ships, yachts, sailboats and fishing boats is very incipient as a result of the covid-19 pandemic.

A highly affected sector as a result of the pandemic was the tourism industry, which in 2021 had a slight recovery, presenting 14 landfalls in Colombia with 10,552 tourists in the ports of Cartagena and Santa Marta.

The overall growth of International maritime cargo traffic in 2021 compared to 2020 was 2.3%.

In this way, Dimar ensures that if the same rate of growth or recovery of international maritime cargo traffic in Colombia is maintained, it is possible that only until 2026 will the pre-pandemic levels be registered again.
