Since April, the western region reports at least 15 deaths related to high temperatures. Most of the victims are patients over the age of 50, who previously suffered from heart problems, high blood pressure and diabetes, said a source from the Ministry of Health.

“The heat probably caused the death of these 15 people who suffered from obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. The ages of the victims range between 30, 50 and 80 years, residing in Managua, León and Chinandega. These are the departments where the most deaths have been reported these days,” explained the medical source.

On May 9, a 50-year-old woman collapsed in an alleyway in the Oriental market, in Managua. Merchants told the Red Cross that they provided coverage for the emergency, that the deceased approached a section, she said that her chest hurt, she asked for water and fell to the ground.

An internist in the region said that there are other cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, diabetes itself, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, so that younger individuals who accumulate risk factors can suffer heart attacks at an early age, even in people under 45. years. The specialist regretted that in one weekend six older adults were reported dead in Managua, all with a history of hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.
