Mayor of Vitacura on the car used in the murder of Corporal Palma: «That car was identified on March 28 and nobody stopped it. On April 5 it was still going around »

After 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the Carabineros received information from passers-by that a group of individuals fired shots from a blue Chevrolet Sonic vehicle on Arturo Prat street. A few meters away, a concert by the renowned salsa singer Maelo Ruiz was taking place, so that, due to the high flow of officials from the Fourth Police Station of Santiago, they were assuming preventive work in the sector.

In the face of the emergency, the uniformed officers requested the cooperation of the motorized personnel, at that moment, it was that it appeared from Chiloé street to the North. Upon arriving in Matta, Corporal Daniel Palma Yáñez aboard the TT-5930 motorcycle, found himself face to face with the blue Chevrolet Sonic car and less than 100 meters away, from one of the vehicle’s windows one of the passengers shot several times. until two shots hit the uniformed man directly in the face. Hours later, Corporal Palma died at the former Central Post.

Once the investigation began, the Carabineros found the owner of the car from which they had shot, he is a retired non-commissioned officer from the Army, who according to statements to Third he leased the car to three individuals of Venezuelan nationality.

The background showed that the same blue Chevrolet had already been involved in a violent robbery on Alonso de Córdova street with Vitacura on March 28.

The mayoress of Vitacura, Camila Merino, maintains that in order to prevent criminal gangs from continuing to operate in the city of Santiago, it is necessary for all municipalities and Carabineros to have access to information on the vehicles that have been involved in crimes.

“If we were in line with all the municipalities with all the security areas and Carabineros in line with the cars that participate in violent crimes or that have been stolen or that have participated in a violent crime, we could react much faster and catch them in flagrante delicto. “, expressed the mayor to The counter.

“The information has to be available to everyone. Many days have passed here, this should have been the same night to already be alert,” he added.

theft of watches

According to Camila Merino, the crime that occurred in Vitacura barely 10 days ago involved the theft of a luxury watch. The incident would have the same way of operating as the “Motoclock”, a gang dedicated to the theft of luxury watches that operates mainly in the eastern sector of the capital. However, the crime caught the attention of the municipality because an attack like this had not been recorded in Vitacura since May 2022.

“This type of theft of watches is an exported crime. Gangs are caught but later a new one is articulated and they have generally been foreigners. The others that had previously attacked were caught by the PDI last year and the crime stopped, So when a new gang returns, obviously all the police teams are dedicated to being able to disrupt it and they don’t continue,” said the mayoress.

The vehicle involved in the homicide of Corporal Palma had been captured by the commune’s security cameras and since March 28 the characteristics and license plate number of the vehicle that had committed the robbery were known. In this sense, the mayoress insists that if there had been cooperation between municipalities and the police, criminals could be more easily caught. “That car was identified on March 28 and nobody stopped it, on April 5 it was still going around,” she says.

“We have worked a lot on the subject of flagrante delicto because either the neighbor notifies us at 1403 and we arrive in two minutes and we know where they are escaping, so they are chased and we do not capture the entire gang, but we capture one and that helps to move forward with the investigation. Or we know they are coming and we chase them before they arrive because they have already done something wrong elsewhere,” Merino explains.

In this sense, the mayor maintains that the criminals travel through different communes for several hours and “they accumulate cars, they steal one in Maipú, then they go to Providencia or they go to Puente Alto and then they go to Vitacura.” So the complaints are of the utmost importance because there is a record that can be useful to catch those involved.

“In minutes we all have to know, if the municipalities have information, the highways also have it, it has to be everywhere which car participates in the acts of violence,” reaffirms the mayoress.
