May 1 is Labor Day

In the Industrial Revolution, the poor working and living conditions of the working class are exacerbated: labor exploitation, low and precarious remuneration, unhealthy working conditions, endless hours and piecework payments, underpaid child and female labor, among other injustices.

In this context, during the 19th century, the labor movement became more relevant, manifesting itself with a greater presence in the United States, considering the importance given to industrialization as the basis of its economic development under a capitalist model, as detailed by the National Human Rights Commission.

What is celebrated on May 1?

May 1 is Labor Day. The date was set during the Socialist Workers Congress of the Second International held in Paris in 1889. The idea was to remember and vindicate the Chicago Martyrs, a group of trade unionists who were sentenced to death for their participation in a strike that began on the 1st of May 1886 in the United States.

Why is Labor Day celebrated?

May 1 has shared the date with International Workers’ Day since the 1880s. At the time, labor movements around the world were fighting for fair working conditions: eight-hour work days and unions.
