Mexican fisherman rescues eight Cuban rafters

MIAMI, United States. – A fisherman from the Mexican port of Río Lagartos rescued this Friday eight Cuban rafters who drifted on the high seas for 14 days, according to the Yucatan Journal.

According to the statements of the Cuban migrants to that medium, the group left Havana on April 13. Five days later, the raft they were traveling on broke down and they sailed aimlessly until they were found by the Mexican fisherman.

For its part, the Police reported that around 2:30 pm this Friday, Eduardo Guga Guerrero, the fisherman who found the eight Cubans on the high seas, appeared before the authorities.

Guga Guerrero indicated that he had towed the flimsy boat in which the rafters had launched themselves into the sea with the hope of reaching the United States.

Upon reaching land, the Cubans were evaluated by paramedics, who indicated that they only presented “slight dehydration”, and provided them with serum.

Later, they were delivered to the Port Authority of Río Lagartos, where they were received by personnel from the National Migration Institute (INM), the entity in charge of repatriating them to the Island.

According to Yucatan JournalThe rafters said they were fleeing Cuba due to government repression, poverty and hunger.

This Friday is the third rescue of Cuban rafters near the Mexican coast. Last April 2, nine migrants from the island landed in the port of El Cuyo, state of Yucatan.

The nine migrants – seven men and two women – had left Cuba on March 19, they told the local press. After the rescue, the group was transferred to the Tizimín Municipal Police base, where they received medical attention, food, drinks and were given a serum, since some had problems of dehydration.

Shortly before, the Mexican press also had informed of the case of eight rafters, presumably Cuban, found adrift northeast of Isla Mujeres, in the state of Quintana Roo. The migrants were found safe and sound by a tanker that was crossing the Yucatan Canal on February 10.

The rescued people were also handed over to the staff of the National Institute of Migration, for their subsequent transfer to the city of Mérida.

Weekly, dozens of Cuban rafters launch into the sea with the aim of reaching the coast of Florida, United States. However, most migrants are intercepted by US authorities.
