Lesther Alemán: "Ortega has ruined our generations"

The young opponent and political prisoner Lesther German denounced before world leaders, who are participating in the II Summit for Democracy, the “brutal” repression and the prolonged “authoritarian radicalization” of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo against the Nicaraguan people, that five years after the outbreak in April, the sociopolitical crisis “urgently calls for a solution.”

“Five years after the political crisis in Nicaragua, prolonged by the ambition for power of the Ortega and Murillo family, the results urgently call for a solution as soon as possible,” said the student leader in his speech.

There are “355 families of people murdered” in 2018 waiting for justice, “37 political prisoners in inhuman conditions, a forced exile for thousands, and more than six million Nicaraguans who live in a prison in the open skies in what is still left of the country,” exposed.

The protracted crisis

In his speech, the young opponent recalled that in 2018 Nicaraguan youth demonstrated against the Sandinista dictatorship to demand democracy, respect, freedom and justice. The protests were brutally repressed by the regime, which left a total of more than 350 people murdered, according to a report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

«The non-existent democracy in Nicaragua and the increasing authoritarian radicalization of the Ortega regime It has ruined our generations, we have had to pay the high costs of this crisis.”he highlighted.

He also pointed out that “in the year 2021, the dictatorship executed a wave of imprisonments to a part of the oppositionbut it did not succeed in ensuring that the voices of those who remained inside and outside the country continued to resound in the world, achieving condemnation from many countries of the brutality of the regime and causing greater isolation against it.

Lesther Alemán, leader of the Nicaraguan University Alliance (AUN), also denounced that as part of the attacks of the Ortega dictatorship against the opponents, on February 9, the regime stripped of their nationality and exiled 222 political prisoners from Nicaraguaincluding him.

“This behavior by Daniel Ortega reaffirms that in our country crimes against humanity have been committed and continue to be committed, crimes where only those responsible are Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. Today they continue in impunity,” said the opponent, who in turn questioned the world leaders participating in the Summit. “Will they believe that this is governing based on law, respecting the Political Constitution, based on respect for international law, based on the minimum standards of decency and humanism? Of course not.”

“All Nicaragua is a crime sceneYes, crimes against humanity. Therefore, the problem and instability caused by Daniel Ortega and his totalitarianism in our country is also an evil that afflicts and should worry the region,” he warned.

The opposition leader also asked the governments of the region that participated in the Second Democracy Summit to guarantee respect for human rights in Nicaragua.

“I ask that as Member States in this Summit that defends and prioritizes democracy, freedom, justice, human rights, you also be our echo in the face of these denunciations, exhaust all your measures to isolate the Ortega regime and join us. to the global denunciation, Showing indolence in the case of a crisis of violation of human rights also has responsibility»said German.

“It is necessary that you as world leaders accompany us Nicaraguans to reestablish respect for and guarantee of our fundamental freedoms and rights, to find justice for the victims and to promote the participation of young people in political activism,” he stressed.
