López denied that it was related to the change or appointment of boards of directors in Monómeros and said that it was a consensus of parties. He dismissed the accusations against him that point to an alleged link to the American company Nitron
The opposition political leader in exile and national coordinator of Voluntad Popular, Leopoldo López, issued a release on Sunday, September 18, about Monómeros due to the imminent return of control of the company to the administration of Nicolás Maduro. In that sense, he stated that Guillermo Rodríguez Laprea was left on the board of the state company, whose removal was ordered by the interim government headed by Juan Guaidó in October 2021.
He denied that while he was coordinator of the Government Center, between August 28, 2019 and December 2020, he had to do with the designation or appointment within the board of directors of Monómeros, but explained that the composition of the management team it could only be carried out “as a result of a negotiation between the different fractions of parliament” and therefore, the interim had no control over it.
He claimed to have supported and recommended the dismissal of those officials named in Monómeros who incurred in alleged crimes of corruption. He stated that, once the Superintendence of Companies of Colombia ratified the allegations of irregularities, he began to work to reach consensus and pursue the objective of reorganizing the company.
On 09/15 Maduro has once again taken control of Monómeros. In addition, he maintains the accused of corruption in the General Management, whose removal was ordered by the Interim Government in October 2021.

Similarly, Leopoldo López dismissed the accusations against him that point to an alleged link to the US company Nitron and stressed that it is the general manager of Monómeros, in this case Guillermo Rodríguez Laprea, who is responsible for establishing commercial relations. He clarified that only on two occasions did the general manager of that state company consult the board of directors about the agreements with the aforementioned North American company.
“Where does the accusation against me come from? Who invented the “hostile takeover”? The designated. The corrupt. They hired lawyers and lobbyists, in Colombia and the United States, to create the story, with the sole purpose of staying in the company, ignoring the decisions of the Interim Government. The only hostile takeover was the one perpetuated by Rodríguez Laprea and his henchmen,” López wrote.
He stated that the situation in Monómeros was already serious before the interim government was formed.
The board of directors of the Monómeros fertilizer company was restructured on Tuesday September 13th; however, the changes will not affect the general manager, since Guillermo Rodríguez Laprea was ratified in the position.
According to information released by the Barranquilla Chamber of Commerce, the five main members are: Luis Enrique Molina, Heifred Segovia, Marco Piñero, Rodrigo Ramírez and Cristóbal Padilla. While the list of substitutes is made up of: Eduardo Fernández, Genesis Ron, Nohemy Rodríguez, Ninoska Rodríguez and Mary Nava.
For him september 6the Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, reported that “the proposal is on the table” that the government of Nicolás Maduro sell Monomers to Colombia.
“It is a proposal that is on the table. It is a message that President Maduro gave and the idea is that we stay with that company, “he said in an interview with Semana magazine.
