Leopoldo López asserts that only with a political change will human rights in Venezuela improve

During the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, opposition leader Leopoldo López reiterated that “in Venezuela there is no rule of law or justice.” In the session, held in Geneva, the Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela presented a new oral report on the situation in the country

The founder of the party Popular will (VP) Leopoldo López asserted that the only way for the human rights situation to improve in Venezuela is when the rule of law and democracy are restored, which in his opinion involves a political change.

On Wednesday, March 22, López participated in the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, in which the Venezuela Fact Finding Mission presented a new oral report on the situation in the country, where it was highlighted that the “repression is focused mainly on civil society actors perceived as opponents of the Government.”

The opposition leader reiterated that “in Venezuela there is no rule of law or justice.” He added that representatives of the government of Nicolás Maduro, and some of his international allies, boast of “improvements” that do not exist.

“Not only is it false that there have been improvements, the situation continues to deteriorate for millions of Venezuelans,” said López, who also recalled that more than 282 political prisoners, including civilians and soldiers, remain detained in Venezuela.

He stressed the importance of the Council for the thousands of victims of persecution, rape, murder, arbitrary detention, forced disappearance and torture, in the search for “impartial justice.”

“The largest humanitarian crisis in the hemisphere, millions of Venezuelans plunged into extreme poverty, corruption carried out by high-ranking officials of the regime that Maduro himself recognized this week, hundreds of political prisoners and the largest migration crisis in the world, which amounts to more than 7.2 million people have a fundamental cause, a name: Nicolás Maduro,” he emphasized.

Along the same lines, he denied that the economic crisis that the country is going through is due to the foreign sanctions that have been imposed against Nicolás Maduro and his leadership of officials. For López, the government replicates that speech as “a tactic” to divert responsibility from him.

According to a press release, released by the opposition press team, López mentioned the presentation of his complaint, along with more than 2,000 testimonies, before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the investigation he is carrying out for alleged crimes against humanity in the country, at least since 2017. “I ask you and the entire United Nations system, what are you going to do to promote human rights, political change and democracy in Venezuela?”
