Lacalle, together with Rodolfo Saldain, president of the Committee of Experts on Social Security, was received by the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, and the vice president, Verónica Piñeiro, at Huella de Seregni.
After the meeting, Lacalle Pou explained to the media that the bill requires the broadest possible “consensus” and hence the importance of sharing it with all political actors.
He assured that the proposal is “sustainable, gradual and more supportive, for example with minimum retirement benefits, pensions and gender issues”.
Lacalle affirmed that the transition to the new system will be very gradual, since it will end in 20 years.
Includes all subsystems
The president stated that the bill includes all the country’s retirement subsystems: “the Social Security Bank (BPS), the different savings banks and the Retirement and Pension Service of the Armed Forces. They all come together in a single system.
He said that both the Caja de Profesionales and the Bancaria are in a complicated situation, so the urgency is for the entire structure in the medium term and part of the system in the short term.
The head of state remarked that his intention was for the document to be made public after all the political parties had received it. From now on, he said, the necessary political agreements must be reached so that the document is enriched, without distorting it. It will be modified as long as it does not lose coherence.
He pointed out that the modification of the retirement and pension system is a moral duty for him, and that he cannot “look to the side”, because it is an urgent problem for Uruguayans.
He asked the coalition to submit a response to him by August 31, but that is an elastic time.
Meanwhile, Saldain and the Minister of Labor, Pablo Mieres, will request a meeting with the Confederation of Business Chambers and the PIT-CNT, as well as with the different parastatal banks.
