The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, led the act for the 68 years of the Highway Police, held this Thursday 15 at the agency’s headquarters. The Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, said that the service will be reinforced with 30 cars, 20 motorcycles and 150 troops, in order to increase mobility for prevention, care for people and the fight against crime. “It’s one of the most human tasks,” he said.
Also present were the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado; the undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel; the general director of the portfolio, Nicolas Martinelli; the head of Coexistence and Citizen Security, Santiago González; that of the National Police, Diego Fernández, and the national director of the Highway Police, Mauricio Tort, among other authorities and officials of that agency.
“It is one of the directorates of the Ministry of the Interior that has the most humane tasks when it comes to helping people. It is not just traffic police, because it also takes care of life and fights crime,” Heber stressed.
The work of the Highway Police covers 9,000 kilometers on routes throughout the country. Some 455 officials work in the division, dedicated not only to driver education and the protection of citizens, but also to combating cattle rustling, smuggling, arms trafficking and drug trafficking.
The Secretary of State reported that budgetary resources were granted to acquire 30 zero kilometer cars and 20 motorcycles, and 150 troops were incorporated. “We want her mobilized, walking, patrolling.
