The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, will speak with his Ukrainian equivalent, Volodímir Zelenski, after the latter asked Mercosur for a space to speak at the summit held in Paraguay and the organization denied him.
Paraguay and Uruguay agreed but Argentina and Brazil did not and, since decisions must be made by consensus, the request did not advance.
Subsequently, the Ukrainian government asked the Uruguayan for Zelenski to speak with Lacalle by videoconference, which was accepted on Monday, according to versions released to the press.
Uruguay advocates dialogue
When Vladimir Putin launched his war in Ukraine, described by the international community as an invasion, the Uruguayan government rejected actions that are “contrary to international law.”
The Uruguayan president understands that “Russian military forces launched an offensive against Ukraine,” but stressed that Uruguay is a country “that is always committed to peace.”
“We reject actions contrary to international law and UN principles. It is urgent that negotiations return to resolve the conflict in a civilized manner,” added a statement dated February 24.
“In Uruguay’s opinion, dialogue and negotiation are the only ways to reach a solution to this situation. The confrontation is a war that everyone will have lost beforehand. She will leave a bitter and painful mark, as well as an unprecedented setback for our civilization, “the document continued.
