This Friday, June 10, Lacalle participated in the Summit of the Americas, through a video that he broadcast from Montevideo, since he is going through Covid-19.
During his speech, before the president of the United States, Joe Biden, he referred to the fact that economic security is what allows prosperity to be brought to the population.
“We arrived at this Summit betting on multilateralism, on bilateral relations. Uruguay arrives with the firm conviction of a more open world. Uruguay wants to open up to the world and needs other countries and blocs to act accordingly”, said the president.
He added today Uruguay maintains trade relations with regions or countries that have opened their markets for the excellent Uruguayan raw materials, our intellect, our science and technology.
But I emphasize that there is a must in the rest of the world, in the powers, which is to “open up to trade.”
The president stated that if the world is more open, Uruguay has an “enormous opportunity for progress and prosperity for its citizens.”
“For countries to be more prosperous, an open world is needed, less protectionist, a world of complementation,” he said.
Security
He said that in Latin America there are countries that are far from democratic security for their citizens. He mentioned food safety, and remarked that Uruguay is a producer of top quality, natural, healthy, and environmentally sustainable food.
“There are countries with a food deficit that are prepared and ready to exchange with countries that have food security,” Lacalle said.
On the other hand, he referred to the environment. “We have to talk about green finance, environmental finance”, and he proposed that the countries that take care of their natural resources should have access to credits to be able to carry out this important task for humanity.
