June 8, 1952: First match of Cuban women’s soccer

MADRID, Spain.- Although the first Cuban women’s soccer teams were formed in the 1930s, it was not until 1952 that the first official match was held.

The meeting took place on June 8 of that year at the La Tropical stadium in the capital. The newly created teams Deportivo Cuba and Habana met in a preparation match to receive the Costa Rican national team.

Deportivo Cuba and Habana were basically made up of young people from the Puentes Grandes neighborhood in the City of Havana. The match ended with a score of 1-1.

The training had been in charge of the Cuban coach Mario Cubas Valdés, known as “Mayoras”.

The following month the Cubans received the Costa Ricans. Although the locals lost the three matches held, it was a historic moment for women’s soccer on the Island.

In December of that year, the Caribbean women returned the visit to the Ticas to continue with the exchanges.

Although it has taken some steps in recent years, Cuban soccer has not managed to take off, let alone the women’s.

It was not until 2002 that a National Women’s Championship was established on the Island. Even so, not all the provinces of the country participate.

Currently the Cuban women’s national football team is controlled by the Cuban Football Association.

The Leonas del Caribe, as the members of the team are known, qualified in 2018 for their first CONCACAF Women’s Championship after finishing third in the Caribbean Zone Qualifying.
