José Ramón Icaza: ‘There has been a considerable increase in current spending by the Government’

The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP), José Ramón Icaza, referred this Wednesday on Radio Panama, to the control of public funds.

He stated that companies have seen their incomes affected and people have lost their jobs, but they have observed an opposite behavior on the part of the Government, “in which there has been a considerable increase in current spending.”

He explained that last year’s income had a reduction of almost a billion dollars, for which he considered that there is no consistency in the use of public funds and is aggravated by questions from local governments.

“As a Chamber of Commerce we have made the decision to strengthen our Center for Economic Studies, to have technical personnel that can achieve and have the capacity to analyze what budget formulation is, so that from the Chamber we can provide reports to all Panamanians in the use of the funds and we can make the questions”, expressed Icaza.

He added that the institutions that are called upon to oversee the performance of other institutions, the citizens “feel outraged and frustrated to a certain extent, because we do not see that weight and counterweight of that oversight capacity.”

The president of the union stated that citizens expect a proactive oversight by these instructions (Antai and Comptroller).
