José Mujica was admitted again to Casmu to monitor his health

José Mujica was admitted again to Casmu to monitor his health

mujica health status

Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica has been hospitalized again, this being the third time in ten days. On this occasion, doctors will perform a series of tests and have placed a hydration line. His personal physician, Raquel Pannone, will provide more information in the coming hours.

Last weekend, Mujica had a food poisoning problem, which forced him to be admitted to the Medical Union of Uruguay (Casmu) Assistance Center, from where he was discharged a few hours later. He had previously been admitted on August 26 and returned home the following day.

Previous treatments for Mujica

This Thursday, his new admission to Casmu was confirmed. According to initial reports, the situation does not appear to be serious. After his admission last week, Dr. Pannone explained that Mujica had been diagnosed with a tumor in the esophagus, for which he underwent radiotherapy.

“The radiotherapy was very good and we have strong convictions that the cancer was cured,” Pannone said. However, he clarified that the tests did not show evidence of the tumor, but rather “the fibrosis that remains in the esophagus” after the treatment. This procedure has slowed down the recovery of the 89-year-old former president.

Challenges in the health of “Pepe”

The doctor explained that radiotherapy can be compared to a burn, which makes it difficult to eat and causes Mujica to eat less. In addition, his kidney function has deteriorated. Since August 24, Mujica has been receiving IV fluids at home due to his fragility.

On August 25, Mujica did not attend the Day of the Base Committee, a key event for the Frente Amplio, although he was present on August 27 at the presentation of Blanca Rodríguez as a candidate for the Senate. His medical team continues to monitor his health to allow him to return to his activities as his body allows.

Health complications

In April, Mujica was diagnosed with an esophageal tumor. Pannone, who has been with him for more than 15 years, said the cancer was not extensive and that the radiotherapy treatment he had received was successful. However, the side effects, coupled with his advanced age, have complicated his recovery.

Although the cancer has been removed, Mujica remains in a fragile state that requires care. Fibrosis in the esophagus affects his ability to eat. Added to this, his advanced age means that his recovery is slower, complicating his health.

Side effects and current status

In addition to fibrosis, Mujica suffers from kidney failure and vasculitis, which have contributed to his recent episodes of decompensation. Although the treatment has been effective against cancer, the side effects have weakened the former president.

His doctor continues to monitor his symptoms every day, hoping that he can resume his activities. In a recent interview, Mujica confessed to feeling “destroyed” physically, reflecting the prolonged battle with his health problems. His medical team is committed to offering him the best quality of life possible while he continues his recovery.
