Still without the final results of the midterm elections, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, assured the press on Wednesday that he hopes to continue working with his Republican opponents, as he has done for almost five decades, throughout his political career.
“I think the vast majority of members of the Republican Party, even if we disagree on certain issues, are decent, upstanding people,” Biden said. «I have worked with many of these people in the Senate, in the House, they are honest people»
One day after the mid-term elections in the country and without all the ballots counted, the Republicans dominate the House of Representatives with 207 seats against their Democratic rivals, while the Senate maintains a 48-seat tie. In the Upper House, the Democrats still have the point of advantage that the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris gives them.
Republicans held more state governorships, outscoring Democrats 24-22.
“It was a good day, I think, for democracy. And I think it was a good day for the United States (…) Our democracy has been put to the test in recent years, but with their votes, the American people have spoken and demonstrated once again that democracy is what we are, “he said.
This Wednesday night the head of the White House is expected to talk with the potential leader of the House, Republican Kevin McCarthy.
Biden praised the US electoral process, in his first televised intervention after the elections: “It was a good day for democracy and for the country,” he insisted.
When questioned by reporters about a possible candidacy of former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential elections, after his defeat two years ago that culminated in the assault on Capitol Hill, Biden was categorical: “I am going to make sure that his campaign is carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution.

The control of Congress, still in the air
The control of the United States Congress has not yet been defined, almost twenty-four hours since the mid-term elections were held on November 8; however, there was no “red tide” as some Republican supporters announced would happen against the Democratic caucus.
“The margin of difference in the Senate is still too close to determine who will control it, but it is certainly not the night that many high-level Republicans expected,” Lindsey Cormack, a political expert from Washington, told Voice of America. .
At the end of Wednesday afternoon, Democratic President Joe Biden praised, in an exchange with journalists, the electoral process. And he was willing to reach a consensus with his Republican rivals after the results in which they take power in the House of Representatives.
