Increases by 138% the number of passengers who used the Tocumen International Airport in the first half of the year

A 138% increase in passengers between January and June 2022, registered the Tocumen International Airport with respect to the same period of 2021. This was revealed by the entity through the publication of a general balance of the movement of passengers, operations and infrastructures, carried out during the first half of 2022.

This report highlights that a total of 4 million 287,884 additional passengers used the airway, managing to serve 7 million 304,205 users in the first six months of this year.


Coinciding with the reactivation of global air traffic and the upward trend towards recovery during the first half of this year in Tocumen (more than one million each month), it was reported that the operators of Duty-free stores have achieved recover its sales according to the gradual traffic of travelers registered since the reopening of international commercial flights in Panama as of October 2020.


The administration of Tocumen SA indicated that the results obtained from January to June 2022 are in line with the forecasts set at the beginning of this year and attributes the achievement of its objectives to the return of more airlines, the increase in frequencies, increase in the factor of occupation, the recovery of routes, and the confidence of passengers in international travel.


As for the number of operations, as reported by the Tocumen International Airport until June of this year, 63,986 aircraft movements were registered on its two runways, 87% more than last year, which represents 29,684 additional operations.


Regarding the transport of goods, during the period analyzed, the cargo operators established at the Tocumen International Airport have managed 118,996 metric tons of goods, 33% more than in the first six months of 2021, a significant increase of 29,588 tons. more from January to June 2022.


With regard to airport infrastructure, on June 22, the general opening of operations was made official in the new Terminal 2, internally connected to Terminal 1, with which the Tocumen International Airport aspires to receive 25 million passengers a year and become the largest port of air connections in Latin America and thus contribute to the generation of direct and indirect jobs, attraction of tourism, reactivation of the economy, logistics facilities, competitiveness and boost to the airline industry of Panama and the region.


The new work, whose investment reaches $917 million dollars, increases the operational capacity of the Tocumen International Airport to 54 boarding gates and 12 remote stations, facilitating connections between continents with flights to more than 80 different destinations in America and Europe.
