In coordination with the Directorate of Carabineros of the National Police, the Prosecutor’s Office dismantled a criminal network that was dedicated to the clandestine sacrifice of horses and their subsequent commercialization in Pereira, municipalities of Risaralda, Eje Cafetero and nearby departments.
According to the official report, approximately 60 tons of horse and beef meat were marketed between 2020 and 2021.
Bad meat and sick animals
The meat was “from sick, fractured, in poor physical condition or dead animals.”
These were acquired in different parts of the country and later, transferred for slaughter in a farm located in the village of El Chocho, in the rural area of Pereira.
Said activity was also carried out in appalling health conditions and without legal permits.
“The meat was transported in private vehicles, without preserving the cold chain,” they detailed.
It was sold in butchers, pie industries, and food processors.
Captured
In three operations carried out in conjunction with the Directorate of Carabineros of the National Police, they discovered the vehicles where the animals were transported and the clandestine slaughterhouse.
Equines, bovines and pigs were found at the site, some alive, others diseased.
Also, scattered residues were found on the ground and others buried in graves.
The aforementioned situation generated nauseating odors, which were denounced by the community.
During the operations, eight members of the illegal structure were captured.
